Last week, New York Post reported that Amazon’s tablet “will sell for hundreds less than the entry-point $499 iPad”. As soon as this rumor spread every journalist / blogger started speculating that Amazon will sell a tablet that will match iPad hardware-wise, but Amazon will subsidize the cost in hope of recovering it later via digital media purchases.
However, we wrote that if Amazon wants to sell their tablet for hundreds less they will have to compromise on quality because recovering $300 via digital media sales is almost impossible. We added Amazon can “use lower quality LCD screen, cheaper casing, slower ARM single core processor and less flash memory to bring the cost down and sell the Kindle tablet for about $299.”
And we were right, MG Siegler reported on TechCrunch that Amazon’s tablet will have a 7-inch touchscreen that relies on a two finger multi-touch (instead of 10-finger on iPad), rubberized casing, just 6GB of storage, no camera and single-core processor. MG says, “Well, not only have I heard about the device, I’ve seen it and used it”. So we believe his information about the Amazon tablet is accurate.
In short, Amazon tablet will have smaller and cheaper 7-inch screen (we can guarantee it won’t be a IPS panel like iPad), cheaper plastic casing, single core processor and less than half storage when compared to iPad. Yes, it will sell for $250, but again like we said “anyone who has seen an iPad will know the difference”.
