Samsung just confirmed that the production of the flexible AMOLED displays will debut in the second quarter of 2012. Presented like some WVGA 4.5-inch prototype panels last year, these displays will be built at the brand new 5.5-Gen Samsung plant, which will be launched next year.
The Asian company said that they would like to fir the AMOLED flexible displays on the smaller handhelds, like watches, but also on bigger hand sets, like MIDs and tablets. The technology might be also used for lighting and for numerous electronic products for offices and even for household items.
The AMOLED flexible displays use a plastic polyimide substrate instad of one made of glass. Tests shown that using plastic polyimide insted of glass will allow the flexible displays to bend around a cylinder with an 1-inch diameter.A big win for this type of displays is that they use the AMOLED technology, meaning that they come with low energy consumption and good lightning.
Samsung promised that the AMOLED flexible displays are practically indestructible, but we will see if it’s true or not once they hit the market.
The samsung Mobile Display division will start the production of the AMOLED flexible panels in 2012. Even though they don’t seem the best option for the devices we got used to, it seems that the Asian company wishes to integrate them in a new line of phones that will get use closer to the bracelet smartphone concept.
It seems that Samsung have made an agreement with a Japanese company called Ube Kosan, a company that will play an important role in the production of the AMOLED flexible displays. Ube Kosan will be responsible to manufacture the plastic material substrate used for the new panels.
Anyway, studies show that the flexible displays market will reach an impressive turnover in 2015, approximated at $2.5 billion, a good-enough reason for anyone capable of developing such displays to enter this market.
In 2012 , when Samsung Mobile Display is set to debut the first AMOLED flexible display, Samsung will probably be the first company that will create smartphones to integrate this new technology
