Well, if you like to use your iPad for magazines or newspapers, you’ll soon be able to purchase subscriptions directly from the App Store, rather than buying by the issue. Apple announced its App Store subscription service today, which will be available to all “publishers of content-based apps on the App Store℠, including magazines, newspapers, video, music, etc.” The subscription service allows publishers to set their own price and subscription frequencies (weekly, monthly, etc.). Customers can select the subscription they want and will be automatically charged. Apple walks away with 30 percent of the deal.
Publishers will also be able to sell their subscriptions outside of the App Store, which will deliver 100 percent of the revenue to the publisher itself.
Steve Jobs explained in a statement: “Our philosophy is simple—when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing. All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app.
